Dear Friends,
I hope this finds you well. Like must of the country, we have had lots of rain, floods, and now heat. Hopefully, we will get back to the good old hot weather of summer, without all the flooding.
Summer seems to be the time of reunions. What a wonderful way to make connections with our extended families. I have reported on three reunions in this issue, one of which has not yet happened. I hope you will try to go to the Doutt-McKinney reunion. I know that all Doutts and relatives of Doutts are welcome, and they would love to see you. The numbers attending it have dwindled over the years, but they are hoping to continue. It would be a shame if the 109th reunion were the last.
I have taken a few short trips this summer with one or another of my children. It was fun to travel to Memphis and tour Elvis's home, and to Chattanooga, Tennessee, and see the view from the top of Lookout Mountain. Also we rode up the Incline Railroad. I went with my daughter, Christine, and grandchildren, Meredith and Andy. Christine suggested that I take trips with each of my children, and then I could rate them against each other.; (for the quality of the trip??) Funny girl!
Take care, and let me hear from you.

Anyone who has Smiths to research knows how hard they are to find. So I wasn't surprised to be at a brick wall with Philip Smith and his wife Mary, parents of my great-grandmother, Sarah G. Smith who married Absalom Solomon Doutt Jr. They were in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania in the 1850 and 1860 census. From Sarah's death certificate, I learned that her mother's maiden name was McFarland, but other than that, I was stuck.
In 1997, I sent a query in to Armstrong County, Pennsylvania on the Internet, asking for information about Philip and Mary McFarland Smith. I had found nothing except the 1850 and 1860 census records. As for their children, of course I had records of Sarah (who married Absalom S. Doutt Jr.) and also a little about Sarah's brother, Samuel, but nothing else.
Fast forward to the Spring of 2008. I received a message from a nice lady who was doing look-ups for another researcher. She had seen my 1997 query, and wondered if there was a connection to the Philip Smith and Mary Weaver she had found in Franklin Co., Illinois, who were in the 1870 census there. Several of their children had married in Franklin County, Illinois, and had listed parents as Philip Smith and Mary Weaver. My first reaction was to question it, but upon studying it farther, it seems most likely that it is the same family. I have to assume that the son who gave the informtion for Sarah's death certificate gave the incorrect information. As a son of Sarah's, he probably knew that one of his grandmothers' maiden name was McFarland, but must have gotten the wrong one. Perhaps he didn't know the other's name. It seems pretty sure that he had never met either lady.
So, my great-great grandparents were in Franklin County, Illinois by 1870, along with several of their children. No wonder I couldn't find them in Pennsylvania. One wonders if Sarah was aware of how close-by her siblings were, when Sarah and Absalom moved to Chester, Illinois. Only 50 to 60 miles away; not far by today's standards, but certainly a long ways in 1880.
Recently I was able to visit the cemeteries in Franklin County, Illinois, where some of the Smiths are buried. Philip and Mary's names are listed on the stone along with a son (George Weaver Smith) and some of his family, but there are no death dates for Philip and Mary on the stone. I would imagine that they are buried there, but haven't found proof as yet. The entire family needs a lot of research.
Another surprise came from the same researcher I mentioned earlier. I had said that I was sure of my information about Elizabeth McFarland. Her name was correct and her father was William McFarland, residing in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. (Elizabeth McFarland married Absalom Solomon Doutt, and later divorced him). She commented that she had a William McFarland who resided in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, also. We compared notes, and found that it was the same William McFarland. I was able to give her a copy of his will, and she was able to tell me his wife's name, which was Nancy Stewart.
Maiden names can be difficult to learn, and I feel very fortunate to be able to report two new ones to you. William McFarland and Nancy Stewart are parents of Elizabeth McFarland, who married Absalom Solomon Doutt. And Philip Smith and Mary Weaver are the parents of Sarah G. Smith, who married Absalom Solomon Doutt Jr. Two more puzzles are solved, at least partially. Page 8 | ||

Briefly, here is what I know about Philip Smith's family.

5) James Smith b: abt 1837 (I think this family was in 1860 Armstrong Co., Pennsylvania, lists wife, Leah, children: Samuel, Mary, Elizabeth A.; not found after that.
6) Sarah G. Smith b: 13 Feb 1840 d: 19 Jun 1921 m: Absalom Solomon Doutt Jr. (This family is found in Lawrence County, Ohio in 1870, and in Randolph County, Illinois in 1880. Their children are Mary, Samuel, Eda, Solomin, Thomas, Bertha, Agnes, and Sarah).

Kathy Doutt wrote that her mother, Anna Pugsley Doutt, celetrated her 91st birthday in September 2007, and decided she wanted a family reunion. Things happened quickly then. Joy (Kathy's sister) brought their mother back to Illinois, and they had the reunion at a park in Milan on the first of October. Almost everyone was able to attend. Afterward, Kathy took her mother to visit relatives in Holland, Michigan; Brunswick, Ohio; Florida; Mississippi; Dallas; Albuquerque, NM; and on to Williams, AZ; and eventually home to Vallejo, California. It was quite a road trip. |

Maryanne Doutt
Maryanne Doutt of San Jose, passed quietly on May 24th, 2008. She is survived by her children, Joanne Jones of San Diego, Mark Doutt of San Jose, her grandchildren Katie, Kristoffer, Brittney, Madison, great-grandson Jack and her sister Ellen LaBonte of Eureka. She was stubbornly independent until the very end, a trait we knew well. Her greatest lesson was her devotion to Jesus. Mom kept a smile on her face and courage in her heart until the very end. Our hearts will ache and our tears will flow. We'll miss her so very much. Heaven is definitely sweeter now.
